The term "Pangueros" refers to the word "Panga". A panga is a skiff (usually 25 feet long) invented, designed and built in the Baja California peninsula. Its design has traveled the world and is the most common small craft fishing vessel used in Mexico and Latin America. Thus, the fisherman who work out of these vessels are known as the "Pangueros". The Pangueros are hearty hard working folks that make a living harvesting the bounty of the ocean. Today we embark on a journey to document their vessels, their daily life, their catch and if we are lucky, maybe we will land a mermaid!!!
Day One- After a tiring 10 hour drive (all by myself) from Sacramento to Mexicali, I arrived exhausted, nevertheless to be greeted with a succulent shrimp cocktail made by the one and only Carlos the Cook.
The Baja California peninsula stretches over 1000 miles and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on the West and the Gulf of California on the East. It contains some of the best fishing on the West Coast and is home to hearty souls that make a living at harvesting the ocean's bounty and creators of some of the tastiest culinary seafood delights.
